It describes the filter, not the machine. A HEPA filter traps 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns in a laboratory test of the filter medium itself. How much of your room's air passes through it depends on the fan, the room size and how long it runs — none of which the percentage tells you. Treat it as a floor for the filter's quality, not a promise about your air.

How big a room will a portable purifier handle?

A compact unit is for one small room, a desk or a bedside table. Blueair publishes 465 ft² for its 511i Max; most makers publish nothing at all, and where nothing is published you should assume small. Our pick is a bedroom-and-desk machine and we say so rather than leaving it open.

What do replacement filters cost?
